Taking a break from our regularly scheduled countdown to mention my favorite recent Christmas Albums. These could become the "new" classic records. They don't quite bring me that wonderful nostalgic Christmas feeling, but they do offer a few new versions of old classics & add a few new ones into the mix.
Amie Mann's One More Drifter In The Snow is a relatively sparse & quiet record. She sings some classics like Winter Wonderland, I'll Be Home for Christmas, Whatever Happened to Christmas and a great version of You're a Mean One Mr Grinch. It's really becoming on of my favorite Christmas records. Here is a sample of the record.
Next up is Sufjan Stevens's Songs For Christmas. If you know Sufjan's music already you will expect this to be far from conventional. This 42 track record explores many different sounds and, the lyrics range from the wonderfully absurd to worship. Some of the songs are short interludes and variations on segments of classic songs, but he has written a good amount of original stuff as well. Enjoy a live performance here here and a music video here. Such a beautiful album.
More Christmas goodness coming soon...
Mikey
